Headstone Rangers - A Written History

Headstone Rangers Football Club was founded in December 1996 by a group of friends determined to play Sunday League football.  By May of that year Headstone Rangers had appointed their coaching staff, Geoff Wheeler was named as manager with Dave Reynolds being appointed as his assistant.

We then were admitted to The Harrow Sunday Challenge League for 1997 / 1998 and were placed in the fourth division and keenly awaited the start of the season.  We then signed a years sponsorship deal with a local Fish ‘N’ Chip shop, Peter’s Fish Bar.

In our first season we finished 9th out of ten and we still got promoted, we won five league games and more importantly we won the League’s fair play award.  At our awards evening in June 1998 Paul Jarvis won Player’s Player of the Season, Paul Dutton won the Management’s Player of the Season, Marc Pierre won. Most Improved Player, Olly Cotton won the Golden Boot with nine goals and James Wheeler won the Club Man of the year award for his outstanding work behind the scenes.

For the 1998 / 1999 Season Headstone we sign three new players who all made a big impact.  Sweeper Paul Tucker signed in November, along with Left Wing / Forward Nick Wale and attacking Midfielder Matt Rogers.  Headstone Rangers now in Division Three finished fourth and gained promotion to the 2nd Division.

For the 1999 / 2000 season we signed Striker Andy Carr, Midfielder Steve Wale and Jethro Cotton.  We also went on our first ever tour to Amsterdam, which was a complete success.
We finished 8th in Division Two as well as progressing well in some of the Cups.

The 2000 / 2001 season saw the return of Utility player Mark Liggins who played two games in the first season, full backs Phil Crowcroft and Marc Farmer and another Utility player in Gary Allen. We finished 2nd in Division Two gaining promotion to Division One.

The 2001 / 2002 season saw us sign defenders Alan Hunter and Robin Bailey as we hoped to stay afloat in Division One and avoid relegation. However we struggled and finished bottom of the league and were relegated back to Division One.

The 2002 / 2003 season was arguably our finest season ever with us finishing third in a very competitive division. We won games in style and played the best football in the club’s history. This season saw us sign Defender Duncan Buttle, Midfielder James Chandler and Forward Martin Saunders.

The 2003 / 2004 season was a massive disappointment for all involved with club as he finished bottom of Division One with five points and were relegated back to Division Two.

The 2004 / 2005 season was a strange season for the club we were second in the league from the first game until the end of January and then we tailed away at the end finishing midtable

The club not only competes in England, for the last six seasons we have undertaken an Easter tour visiting Amsterdam, Brussels, Antwerp, Breda, Noordwijk and Valkenburg.
